The Indo-Pacific has seen unparalleled rates of social media adoption and new media proliferation, tied to the rise of new technologies (ex. cellphones, high-speed internet). As the lofty goal of building shared identities and values throughout the region gains steam, the role of new media in this process is brought into question. This panel ambitiously seeks to explore the rise of new media in the Indo-Pacific and the way in which it has influence, helped, or hindered the process of identity-building in the region. Moreover, this panel also seeks to explore the intersections of new media, governance and emerging issues in the region.
Some of the questions this panel may ask include (but are not limited to):
- What is the role of social media proliferation in building community throughout the Indo-Pacific?
- Has new media helped or hindered the building of shared values in the Indo-Pacific? How so?
- Is there a relationship between social media and democratic backsliding in the Indo-Pacific? If so, how could this be addressed?
- How has social media framed emerging challenges in the region (ex. climate change, gender, etc.)?
