Over the past decade, the national security landscape of India has undergone significant transformations. The internal security threats present earlier have evolved into multifaceted challenges, requiring a reassessment of mitigation strategies. These challenges are arising from traditional sources of violence within India as well as from state actors and are significantly impacting India’s national security paradigms.
The Counterterrorism and Internal Security Program collaborates with diverse stakeholders, including state and private institutions like the Indian government and military, foreign diplomatic missions in New Delhi, and non-governmental organizations within India and worldwide. Through multimedia and written projects, the Program actively shapes New Delhi’s security thinking and practice trajectory.
Recently, our focus within the Program has been on counter-terrorism efforts. We conducted extensive research to determine the realistic potential for reconciliation between the Indian government and Naxalite insurgents in the Indian hinterland. We also analyzed indicators, or the lack thereof, for the possible resurgence of the Khalistani insurgency and delved into the causes and impacts of fundamentalist radicalization in the Indian state of Kerala concerning the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. In all these endeavors, the Program worked closely with key stakeholders to define precise objectives and design effective methodologies to inform sound policy-making.
