Central Asian geopolitics

This project evaluates geopolitical dynamics in the Central Asian Republics, focusing on Russia’s withdrawal and China’s expanding influence. It explores avenues for enhancing India’s engagement with the region, both independently and via strategic alliances, considering the Russia-Ukraine conflict and China’s regional strategies.

This project assesses the current geopolitical trends in the Central Asian Republics (CARs), especially concerning Russia’s ongoing retrenchment and resultant rise in Chinese influence. It will explore the space and possible means for deepening India’s engagement with the region by itself and through strategic partnerships. The impact of the Russia-Ukraine war, peculiarities in China’s influence operations in the region and the increasing securitisation of China’s interests in the region will form a broad context for the Study.
